Contact Lens Exam
At Devine Eyes in Columbia, we know that if you are going to wear contact lenses for the first time or if you have worn them for years, you will need a contact lens exam. Routine eye exams are important for detecting eye diseases and providing you with appropriate care. Contact lenses can help you effectively manage eye conditions while improving your vision.
During the exam, our eye doctor will also discuss your lifestyle. We will use this information to pair you with the type of contact lenses that will benefit you the most. When performing a contact lens exam, our eye doctor must consider several factors.
Looking at Your Cornea
Determining your needs for contacts requires a different approach than an exam for prescription eyeglasses, which fit on your face about 12mm or so from your eyes. In contrast, contacts fit over your eyeball. Exams you will get at our office include measuring the power of the contact lens you need as well as the curative and diameter of your cornea.
If you have astigmatism, for example, the curvature of your lens is not perfectly round and you will require a lens made for astigmatism. If our optometrist determines that you have other eye conditions that require a special lens, we will conduct further exams.
Evaluating Tear Production
If you have never worn contacts before, our eye doctor will evaluate your tear production. Tear production is very important in determining whether or not you are a good candidate for contact lenses. Unless production is sufficient to properly hydrate and moisten the lenses, your eyes will feel dry, uncomfortable, and scratchy. Even if your eyes do not produce a lot of moisture, wearing contacts is still a possibility because some varieties foster moisture production.
Following the exam, our optometrist will likely give you trial contact lenses to wear away from our office for a short period. Some specialty lenses, such as colored and bifocal lenses, may need to be ordered before you can try them out. After a trial period, you will return for a follow-up appointment to have your prescription finalized.
